Bears hope he's back in regular season

Bears QB Jay Cutler needs an operation on his fractured throwing thumb, but the team hopes he'll be able to return before the end of the regular season.

"He'll be out for an extended period of time. The plan now is for him to have surgery on the thumb -- soon," said Chicago coach Lovie Smith on Monday.

"The plan is to get him back at the latter part of the regular season."

VOTE: Will Bears reach playoffs minus Cutler?

The Bears (7-3) currently hold one of the NFC's two wild-card spots along with the Lions. But the Falcons, Cowboys and Giants all currently lurk at 6-4, though Dallas is presently in the playoff field as the nominal NFC East leader.

Smith said the team will look for a veteran quarterback to add to the roster in the meantime. He also expects the offense to become more run-oriented after it strayed from RB Matt Forte the last two weeks.

"Don't feel sorry for us or anything like that," said Smith. "We have a lot of things in place. We're losing and we're gonna miss a great player for a period of time. But offensively, we're gonna rely on our running game a little bit more.

"We will miss Jay, but we'll keep his spot warm. But in the meantime, we're going to continue to win with (backup) Caleb (Hanie)."
